A week-long birding adventure in Bhutan takes you through four stunning districts, offering a rich tapestry of avian diversity and breathtaking landscapes. The lush valleys and forests are home to species like the Ibisbill, Satyr Tragopan, and the elusive Blood Pheasant. Throughout the week, you’ll be immersed in Bhutan’s pristine natural beauty, from mountain passes to verdant valleys, while experiencing the country’s rich culture and warm hospitality. This birding journey is not just a feast for the eyes but also a soulful connection with nature in one of the world’s most biodiverse and serene destinations.
Begin your unforgettable journey with Trogon Travels in Bhutan! Greeted with a traditional Bhutanese reception, you'll transfer swiftly to your hotel to relax. After lunch, we will look out for the strange Ibisbill, which breeds here amongst the gravel islands in the fast-flowing rivers, and the furtive Black-tailed Crake and Rudy-breasted Crake. Typical breeding birds in the area include River Lapwing, Brown Dipper, Little Forktail, White-capped Redstart, Solitary snipe, White Wagtail, Plumbeous Water Redstart, Grey-backed shrike, Olive-backed Pipit, Grey-backed Shrike and other common birds.
We will be taking an early trip up to the Chelela Pass for our first opportunity to view some of the spectacular Himalayan Monal, Kalij Pheasant, and Blood Pheasant and the good selection of the high-altitude birds like Himalayan White-browed Rosefinch, Snow Pigeon, Darjeeling Woodpecker, Dark-rumped Rosefinch and many more. Before the fall evening, we will drive to Bhutan's capital city, THIMPHU.
In the morning, we will drive to the north of Thimphu Valley to look out for the Yellow-rumped Honeyguide, long-billed Thrush, Satyr Tragopan, Mrs. Gould Sunbird and Rufous-throated Wern Babbler. Later, we will have a picnic lunch by the riverside and we will drive to Bhutan Post Office for the collection of some of the rarest stamps and you can even make a personalized stamp and post it to your friends and families. We will drive south of Thimphu Valley in the evening to look out for River Birds.
We will head east out of Thimphu, up to the western slopes of Dochu La, the first of a series of high-altitude road passes. We are entering the pristine mixed forest of Hemlock, fir, oak, magnolias, and Rhododendrons; we should be looking at a wealth of birds and explore the Royal Botanical Park, a place where about 230 species of birds were recorded in a year. We should be looking for skulking Hill Partridge, Brown Parrotbill, Fire-tailed Myzornis, and other Tits and Warblers. Lunch will be served in the park. Towards evening, then we will drive further down to Punakha Valley. If time Permissible, we will look for other waders and Dabbling Ducks.
Drive past the majestic Punakha Dzong, following the serene Mochu River. The journey offers breathtaking views of lush landscapes and quaint villages. As you wind along the river, you'll reach the picturesque point of Tashithang, a haven for bird enthusiasts. Here, diverse bird species, including the vibrant forest birds and elusive, White-bellied Heron, await. The combination of tranquil waters, verdant surroundings, and rich avian life makes this drive an unforgettable experience for nature and bird lovers alike.
Drive past Wangdue Phodrang, stopping at Shaba Thangu to spot waders and ducks. This area is a paradise for bird enthusiasts, offering sightings of various waterfowl. As you continue the journey toward Nobding, be prepared to encounter a diverse array of bird species. The changing landscapes provide habitats for numerous birds, including the colorful Asian Emerald Cuckoo, Himalayan Cutia, Golden-throated Barbet, Bhutan Laughingthrush and the Wards Trogon. Driving back to Paro, keep an eye on the stunning Ward's Trogon and other fascinating bird species along the way.
