Embark on a short bird-watching trip in Bhutan, a paradise for bird enthusiasts. Begin in Thimphu, exploring the lush forests and riverside habitats, home to species like the Fire-tailed Myzornis and the White-bellied Heron. Travel to the serene Punakha Valley, where you’ll spot diverse waterfowl and waders along the riverbanks. Continue to the picturesque Phobjikha Valley, famous for the endangered Black-necked Cranes during winter. Throughout the trip, enjoy Bhutan’s stunning landscapes, rich biodiversity, and serene environment, making it an ideal destination for a memorable bird-watching experience.
Begin your unforgettable journey with Trogon Travels in Bhutan! Greeted with a traditional Bhutanese reception, you'll transfer swiftly to your hotel to relax. After lunch, we will look out for the strange Ibisbill, which breeds here amongst the gravel islands in the fast-flowing rivers, and the furtive Black-tailed Crake and Rudy-breasted Crake. Typical breeding birds in the area include River Lapwing, Brown Dipper, Little Forktail, White-capped Redstart, Solitary snipe, White Wagtail, Plumbeous Water Redstart, Grey-backed shrike, Olive-backed Pipit, Grey-backed Shrike and other common birds.
We will be taking an early trip up to the Chelela Pass for our first opportunity to view some of the spectacular Himalayan Monal, Kalij Pheasant, and Blood Pheasant and also the good selection of the high-altitude birds like Grosbeaks, Rosefinches, Minivets, Tits, Yuhinas, Accentors and Thrushes etc. Before the fall evening, we will drive to Bhutan's capital city, THIMPHU.
In the morning, we will drive to the north of Thimphu Valley to look out for the Yellow-rumped Honeyguide and other birds, we will have a picnic lunch by the riverside and later we will drive to Bhutan Post Office for the collection of some of the rarest stamps and you can even make a personalized stamp and post it to your friends and families. We will drive south of Thimphu Valley in the evening to look out for River Birds.
We will head east out of Thimphu, up to the western slopes of Dochu La, the first of a series of high-altitude road passes. We are entering the pristine mixed forest of Hemlock, fir, oak, magnolias, and Rhododendrons; we should be looking at a wealth of birds and explore the Royal Botanical Park, a place where about 230 species of birds were recorded in a year. We should be looking for skulking Hill Partridge, Brown Parrotbill, Fire-tailed Myzornis, and other Tits and Warblers. Lunch will be served in the park. Towards evening, then we will drive further down to Punakha Valley. If time permits, we will look for other waders and Dabbling Ducks.
Start your scan through Punatshangchu and head towards Nobding for a chance to spot the elusive Ward's Trogon. This area is also known for its diverse and skulking bird species, so keep an eye out for other unique avian life. The rich biodiversity and stunning landscapes of these locations make them prime spots for birdwatching and nature enthusiasts alike.
Embark on an early morning drive to the old road at Pelela Pass, where you can look for the elusive Satyr Tragopan and Monals, as well as the vibrant Fire-tailed Sunbird. Afterward, drive back to Gangtey to see the Black-necked Cranes and visit the information center for more insights. Finally, head to Punakha for the evening.
Driving back to Paro, keep an eye out for the stunning Ward's Trogon and other fascinating bird species along the way. The journey offers ample opportunities to spot a variety of birds in Bhutan's diverse habitats.
