This day would be another wonderful one to pedal up the stream of Wangchu river. Which will take us about 2 ½ hours. Lunch will be served at the base. After lunch, we will hike to Tango monastery which is about 50 minutes up hill and the gradual descend. We will have time to see the historic relics and the paintings inside. Tango is now housed for university of higher studies in Buddhist philosophy. The university now has 250 monks.

Today’s highlight for the team peddlers would be pedaling up to DochuLa pass which will take us 2 hours, gaining about 780 meters to get on to the pass which is 3100 meters above sea level. From the pass the road to Punakha will descend through the magnificent pine and rhododendron forests losing about 1700 m down to Punakha at 1400 m. upon arrival at the valley, we will have time to visit Chimi Lhakhang the 15th century old temple known for its fertility endowments/rites due to the blessings of lam Drukpa Kinley.  The temple sits on a hillock shaped, as only Lam Drukpa Kinley could describe it “like a woman’s breast. Later bike to hotel and check in.

Day 5: Punakha

Today, we’ll pedal to the stunning Punakha Dzong, built in 1637 at the confluence of the Pho and Mo rivers. Afterward, hike through rice fields to the Khamsum Yueley Namgyal Chorten for panoramic valley views, then raft down the Mo Chhu to cool off.

Day 6: Paro

Today would be an easy day for us, since we are driving back to Paro. Upon arrival in Thimphu, we will go for lunch in a local restaurant. Then visit Motithang Takin reserve, to see the national animal of Bhutan ‘TAKIN’. We, then drive further to Sangaygang to hike to and fro. We will resume our journey to Paro.

Tour difficulty level?

The difficulty level of a bike tour through West Bhutan can vary depending on the specific route and the rider's fitness level. However, here’s a general overview of what to expect:

Terrain and Elevation?
  • Mountain Passes: The tour includes cycling over high-altitude mountain passes like Dochula (3,100 meters or 10,200 feet), which can be challenging due to the steep climbs and thinner air at higher elevations.
  • Mixed Terrain: Expect a mix of well-paved roads and more rugged paths, with some sections requiring good handling skills, especially on descents or uneven surfaces.
